Jamalco in Premier League playoffs

first_imgJamalco will represent the South Central Confederation in the Red Stripe Premier League play-offs for the second time in three seasons after scoring a 2-0 win over St Elizabeth’s St Bess in the South Central Confed final at Brooks Park yesterday.Dwayne Dunk headed the Clarendon side in front after 57 minutes, and Rohan Daley sealed the win with a fine team goal in the 71st minute.Jamalco coach Rayon Johnson could hardly contain his excitement after the final whistle, and expects his team to give a stronger showing in the play-offs this time.”We have been having ups and downs throughout the season, so this win is something to be happy about and we are really excited about it,” he said.St Bess were the better team in the first half, but only had themselves to blame for not scoring as they wasted at least three easy scoring chances.Jamalco came into their own towards the end of the first half and, after the break, they continued to look more dangerous. Twelve minutes into the second half, they went in front when Dunk stabbed home a header from six yards after a free-kick was awarded just outside the St Bess goal area.Jamalco continued to have the better of the game, and 14 minutes later, they added a second goal following a swift counter-attack, which was finished off by Daley, who fired a low shot under David Jamieson in the St Bess goal.DESPERATE ATTEMPTSt Bess made a desperate attempt to get themselves back in the game later on, but could not break down a well organised Jamalco defence, despite creating a few half chances.St Bess coach Oneil Thomas said that his players chose the wrong game not to show up.”Today, nobody showed up to play, and it’s the wrong time we chose to do that, but some of it is down to the discipline on the field … and the next team wanted it more than us,” he said.Meanwhile, Johnson is more hopeful of their chances in the play-offs this time.”Everybody will play for a spot in the Premier League. We are all on an even basis now,” he said. “So we just have to go and play our game. Those teams are prepared for us and we just have to do what we have to do and try and get the points.”last_img read more
