Commonwealth Youth Games champion, Junelle Bromfield, will run her first 400-metre hurdles race of the 2016 season at this weekend’s Carifta trials.Bromfield has performed well in the 400 and 800 metres, but hasn’t yet contested a hurdles race. The St Elizabeth Technical High School standout is nevertheless optimistic. With ISSA Boys and Girls’ Championships just around the corner, the trials present a final opportunity for the World Youth Championship finalist to get some race preparation in time.”I’m planning to redeem myself from the disappointment in World Youth, so that’s the aim,” said Bromfield last week in reference to her seventh place finish at that meet in Cali, Colombia.”I’ve been working on my technique very much,” the Reynaldo Walcott-coached athlete offered. “I haven’t done any hurdles races this season, but you’ll see me in one very soon.”Asked whether this would be the trials, she answered, “Yes.”She has the fastest times by a Jamaican schoolgirl in the 400 52.43 seconds and the 800 metres two minutes 07.37 seconds. However, after stopping at the first hurdle in the heats at last year’s Boys and Girls’ Champs, she went on to great things.Bromfield set a personal best of 58.07 seconds at the National Junior Championships, with success at the Commonwealth Youth Games to follow. The fastest Jamaican junior in the event this year is Shannon Kalawan of Edwin Allen High. The diminutive Kalawan won the Central Championships title in 57.20 seconds.Bromfield, Kalawan and the rest of the nation’s best Under-20 athletes will compete for places on this year’s Carifta team at the National Stadium on March 5 and 6.
Share Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest The cold, wet conditions continued this week, keeping fieldwork to a minimum. There were 1.1 days suitable for fieldwork for the week ending May 8th. While some planting of corn, soybeans, and oats occurred in the most southern parts of the state, most growers were kept from planting due to saturated fields and standing water. There were some reports of hail, mainly along the I-77 corridor south of Canton to the River Valley. For most growers, the only activities they were able to work on were spraying weeds and applying fertilizer. Most wheat remains in good to excellent condition despite conditions favorable to stripe rust.Growers are generally in a holding pattern at the moment, waiting for warmer conditions and less precipitation, so that fields can dry up enough for planting.See how much planting progress was made in the past week and view the complete report
“Medication holidays” are often used by parents for children taking stimulant medications for ADD or ADHD. A medication holiday is when a child is taken off their medication for a specific amount of time, like the weekend or during the holidays. Often times, parents choose to take their child off of the medication to have their child’s appetite return if the medication reduced their appetite. Medication holidays are common during the summer months when children are out of school as well as during holidays. Question: What are your thoughts on ‘medication holidays?’ We have a lot of children that come to summer camp who are taking a break from their ADD medication (Military Service Provider).Advice: Stimulant medicine is intended to help with concentration for children diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD); however it also causes a child to have a reduced appetite. If the child is not doing something that needs their concentration, then they can be off of the medication. Being off of ADHD/ADD medication increases the child’s appetite and since children are constantly growing, they need the nutrients from their food to aid in growth. There is a caveat however against allowing teens to have medication holidays if they’re old enough to drive. Being off of the medication decreases their ability to concentrate, resulting in distraction while driving.Expert: Brian Dixon, M.D., Executive Director of Progressive Psychiatry, P.A. and Board Certified Child and Adolescent PsychiatristFor more advice from Dr. Dixon, watch and listen to his professional development training on ADHD, Anxiety, and Autism: Practical Approaches to Child Psychiatry to learn about practical ways parents and caregivers can help manage these disorders, while reconnecting with the fun of parenting. How do you feel about medication holidays? After hundreds of artisans in Moradabad working in the brass industry protested on Monday against the administration’s action against coal-fired hearths for causing pollution, Member of Parliament S.T. Hasan submitted a memorandum to Environment Minister Prakash Javdekar in Delhi on Tuesday. In the memorandum, Dr. Hasan said the action has affected the livelihood of artisans. “Pollution is indeed a big problem, but it should not mean that in an effort to control it we make some people die of hunger,” he said. He appealed to the Environment Ministry that the small units which were running from residential areas be spared for six months till the infrastructure for PNG-based furnaces was laid.‘Provide alternative’ Noman Mansoori, president of the Handicraft Development Society, said artisans were being rendered jobless without being provided an alternative. “Moradabad has around 500 big and 2,000 small metal melting units. The major cause of pollution is smoke from the big units and illegal units where e-waste is dumped. The smaller units, run from home, are those where the artisan cook food and smelt the metal on the same hearth. It causes only as much pollution as a chulha does,” he argued. “But units are being sealed and a heavy penalty is being imposed on poor artisans,” he said, alleging in some cases the police try to extort money from artisans. He said the society created a prototype of PNG-based furnace with the help of experts and offered it to Torrent Gas which is laying pipeline in the city for domestic use. The company gave one commercial connection in Rahmat Nagar in Karula locality in October this year, Mr. Mansoori said. “However, the plan didn’t take off as the artisans are spread across the city. It is for the administration to use funds allocated for Smart City Mission to resettle the artisans in one area.” .Ajay Sharma, Regional Manager, U.P. Pollution Control Board, said in the last two months 66 metal melting units, four illegal e-waste dumping units and one illegal foundry have been sealed. He said small units also cause pollution. “It is just that the amount of particulate matter 2.5 released in the air by them is around one-third of what is released by big units. We take action against really small units only when we get a complaint from the neighbourhood. Often asthma patients complain,” he said.

Awadhe Warriors inflicted a second straight loss on Pune 7 Aces as they registered a win in their PBL season 4 opener at the National Sports Club of India, Mumbai on Monday. In what a dramatic and see-saw encounter, Awadhe edged out Carolina Marin-led Pune and got their season kicked off in a perfect fashion. Awadhe won one men’s singles and both men’s doubles and mixed doubles to win the tie. Pune, on the other hand, could not capitalise on the massive fightback shown by Marin and youngster Lakshya Sen.Awadhe Warriors’s icon player and world No.5 Son Wan Ho set the tone for the match with a win in their trump match over Brice Leverdez. The Frenchman, who had defeated the likes of former world number one Lee Chong Wei on the BWF Tour, looked primed for an upset when he came back from 8-11 deficit to close in on at 12-14 in the first game. But Son dominated the net over the next three points to pocket the first game. From there he never looked back and raced to complete a 15-14, 15-7 win. Pune’s hopes of starting their second tie of the tournament with a win did not materialise as the Warriors took an early 2-0 lead. Son Wan Ho gave Awadhe Warriors a winning start against Pune 7 Aces. (PBL Photo)Pune 7 Aces, who next pitted Vladimir Ivanov with skipper Mathias Boe for men’s doubles, would have hoped that the experienced duo could find a way out to that elusive point to help them rolling in the competition.advertisementLee Yang and Mathias Christiansen cruised to victory in the opening game but Ivanov and Boe fought back from a 6-12 deficit to take the match till the final point only to end up losing the match 15-12, 15-14.The result meant that Awadhe Warriors had a 3-0 lead in the tie and Pune 7 Aces icon player Marin needed to win her trump against Beiwen Zhang to keep the team alive in this tie and the Spaniard did that in style. The world champion provided Pune with the much-needed winning spark as she outclassed 2018 India Open champion Zhang to help the Aces earn their first points in the competition.Marin, who had lost her first match of the season to Hyderabad Hunters’s PV Sindhu, was under pressure after her team lost the first two matches of the second tie, having lost all five matches on Saturday. Carolina Marin won her trump match for Pune 7 Aces against Awadhe Warriors. (PBL Photo)Zhang was clearly high on confidence with her team already 3-0 ahead and that showed in her aggressive play in the opening game as helped herself to a 9-7 lead before Marin came up with a series of four points to get a two-point advantage.Marin then showed the trademark big match temperament to see off a spirited fight from Zhang, who closed in on at 14-13, by raising the tempo during a rally to pocket the game. The Spaniard seemed to be in a hurry to finish the match and simply raised the pace of the rallies and raced to an 8-1 lead before cruising to 15-13, 15-9 win to bring Pune back in the tie at 2-3.Young Lakshya Sen then built on the momentum by edging past Lee Dong Keun in straight games at 15-11, 15-8 to pull the tie back on level terms at 3-3. Lakshya Sen won his first match of the Premier Badminton League. (PBL Photo)It all went down to the decider as Christiansen and Ashwini Ponnappa took the court against Ivanov and Line Kjaersfeldt. It was an enticing game and a test of nerves for the players of both teams as winning the mixed doubles would have won the tie. In the end, Christiansen and Ponnappa came out triumphant and won Awadhe the tie 4-3.How neatly she put it into the other half. #VodafonePBL #PUNvAMD pic.twitter.com/GzGtwKsishPBL India (@PBLIndiaLive) December 24, 2018With the match the Mumbai leg of the tournament got over and on Tuesday, Hyderabad Hunters will take on Chennai Smashers in Hyderabad.
