Not child’s play: Chucky doll featured in errant Amber Alert

first_imgSAN ANTONIO (AP) — The Texas Department of Public Safety is apologizing after accidentally sending out an Amber Alert about Chucky, the killer doll featured in the 1980s horror film “Child’s Play.” The alert was meant to be an internal test, but it was instead sent out three times last week in Texas. The alert identified Chucky as the suspect in the kidnapping of 5-year-old Glen Ray, who was Chucky’s son in the film “Seed of Chucky.” The alert described Chucky as a doll wearing “blue denim overalls with multi-colored striped long sleeve shirt wielding a huge kitchen knife.”last_img

Committed to Border Defense

first_img The BDF believes that completion of a Joint Operations Center in Ladyville in early 2013 will improve information exchange with Mexico to a 24/7 capability. Security forces from the BDF, the Coast Guard, Customs, Police and Immigration will plan and direct operations from the center. In addition, Belize plans to open forward operating bases near the Mexican border to support tactical operations. Geography is a challenge for Belize when it comes to securing its 251-kilometer border with Mexico, a landscape of thick jungles with sparse population and multiple crossing points. To the east, drug traffickers store their supplies in the dense vegetation of Ambergris Caye, on the southernmost tip of the Yucatan Peninsula. To the north, only the narrow Hondo River divides the nations, creating a porous border where smugglers may see security forces approaching. “It is very difficult to be there without the locals noticing our presence,” said Captain Roberto Beltran, chief of military intelligence of the Belize Defence Force (BDF). Belize is a transshipment point for illegal drugs en route to the United States and has limited resources to combat well-financed drug traffickers. But Belizean and Mexican military leaders say improving their communications infrastructure, acquiring equipment and increasing training will help improve control over the porous border. In May 2012, military leaders from both nations met in Belize City to discuss joint security initiatives. Officers from Canada and the United States also attendedthe Belize and Mexico Cross Border Workshop, organized by U.S. Northern Command (NORTHCOM) and U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM). Major Charlton Roches, BDF operations and training officer, said coordination of security efforts in the region is important to win battles against transnational criminal organizations. The Belize Coast Guard and other law enforcement agencies have been working closely with their counterparts from Mexico and Guatemala to combat illicit activities. Commanders meet monthly, quarterly and annually, Maj. Roches said. “We really promoted different ideas that weren’t there before and the accomplishments of some of the goals from the previous meetings,” said Lieutenant Colonel Steven Ortega, second in command of the BDF. “Belize is committed on all fronts.” By Dialogo October 01, 2012 At the workshop, a high-ranking Mexican Marine who concealed his identity for security reasons told attendees to be agile in protecting the air, land and sea borders. In Mexico, combining X-rays with other nonintrusive equipment, such as the GT-200 remote substance detector, and pairing sniffing canines with Soldiers have been effective at checkpoints and naval security posts. “The combination of the three allows us a high degree of certainty,” the official said. “Monitoring the air domain for us is crucial,” said Brigadier General Dario Oscar Tapia, commander of BDF. “A lot of these aircraft will come under the cover of darkness, landing along the border areas where they can quickly get their cargo into Mexico.” Three Fronts Make One Operations with Neighbors Belize and Mexico currently carry out joint operations, which have resulted in large cocaine seizures, according to the International Narcotics Control Board. “Foot patrols in the northern west area of Belize, river patrols on the Rio Hondo, and the Coast Guard conducts blue water patrols in the Bay of Chetumal and the region of Bacalar Chico,” Maj. Roches said. In mid-2012, an unauthorized aircraft landed in Belize near the Mexican border. Belize informed Mexico about it, and Mexico responded with information about a suspicious helicopter in the area. “It is unfortunate that we didn’t catch anyone other than seizing the aircraft,” Maj. Roches said. “However, this effort shows the clear communication link that we have with Mexico.” Increase air and maritime surveillance. Conduct joint exercises. Establish secured communications channels. Improve exchange of information, as well as cooperation in technology and equipment. Drug traffickers use the Belize Barrier Reef, which is roughly 300 kilometers long, as a guide for the maritime route. Unauthorized aircraft use the same reef as a landmark. To stay ahead of the traffickers, security forces move quickly to destroy clandestine airstrips, which they estimate to number in the hundreds, Capt. Beltran said. With the flags of their nations serving as a backdrop, senior officers carefully listened to the conclusions reached during the workshop. The recommendations that emerged included: last_img read more

Griffin out for rest of playoffs with toe injury

first_imgInstead, for the second year in a row he will miss the entirety of whatever playoff run this bad-luck bunch can muster without him.An MRI revealed cartilage damage around the plantar plate of Griffin’s right big toe. Rivers said Saturday that Griffin would likely require surgery, which could be followed by a lengthy rehabilitation stint.Griffin averaged 25 points in the first two games of the series, and had bullied his way to 11 in 18 minutes on Friday before he drove past Jazz guard Rodney Hood for a layup and appeared to land awkwardly, although he later told Rivers he injured the toe on the previous play.“He was playing terrific basketball,” Rivers said. “It’s just a tough blow for him. You feel bad for him.”The playoffs have taken a physical toll on Griffin. Last year, he aggravated an injury to his left quadriceps in Game 4 in the opening round against Portland. SALT LAKE CITY >> His team huddled around him Friday night, Doc Rivers grabbed a clipboard and prepared to address the All-Star power forward who, with a dominant second quarter, had given the trailing Clippers hope of pulling out a victory in Game 3 against the Jazz.Only Blake Griffin was nowhere to be found.“I was looking for Blake,” Rivers said. “I didn’t know Blake had left the floor.”On Saturday morning, Rivers and the Clippers learned that Griffin had been lost not just for one game, nor this one playoff series. Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Errorcenter_img “Right now, he’s probably thinking, ‘Why me?’” Rivers said. “But he’s too good of a guy for this to continue to happen. There’s going to be some kind of sunshine for him at some point. He just has to weather this storm.”Addressing reporters in a Salt Lake City hotel, Rivers described Griffin as “heartbroken.” The five-time All-Star will remain with the team through Sunday’s Game 4 and undergo further evaluation once back in Los Angeles. The Clippers lead their series against the Jazz two games to one after notching a rousing 111-106 victory on Friday behind 34 points from Chris Paul.A day later, Paul appeared on the verge of tears as he spoke to a group of reporters. Asked how Griffin was handling his latest setback, Paul said, “Not great. Not great.”A year ago, Paul broke his hand and was lost for the season within minutes of Griffin getting hurt.“It’s tough,” he said. “Going through as much as me and big fella have been together, it’s always tough. Somebody like that you just hate for dumb stuff like this to happen when you know how hard somebody works.”While the Clippers focus on advancing despite the absence of one of their leaders, there is the inevitable question of what the injury might mean for Griffin’s future with the franchise. Like Paul, Griffin can exercise an early termination option on his contract and become an unrestricted free agent.Twenty-four hours earlier Griffin had been planning on playing deep into May, if not beyond. Suddenly, it was reasonable to wonder if he would ever suit up for the Clippers again.Rivers, who is also the Clippers president of basketball operations, said he had not considered what impact the injury might have on the decisions facing Griffin.“I’m thinking about Game 4,” he said. “Game 4 is what we have to focus on.”Griffin arrived eight years ago with the weight of the franchise on his shoulders. A curly haired Oklahoma kid destined for cross-platform stardom, drafted No. 1 overall by a franchise constantly in search of a savior, Griffin may have been the most important player in franchise history before he ever stepped on the court. He rocketed to stardom with thunderous dunks and a playful personality, making five straight All-Star NBA teams. The Clippers have advanced four times to the second round with Griffin, but have continued to hit their heads on that ceiling, the Western Conference finals proving as elusive for Griffin as staying healthy. His rookie season was delayed by a year when he suffered a broken kneecap in the final preseason game of 2009-10. Over the past three years, he has appeared in just 163 of a possible 246 regular season games. The injuries have fit neatly into the narrative that the Clippers have not only been wildly unfortunate, but that the organization, dating to its 1979 acquisition of Bill Walton, is cursed.“There’s no curse,” Rivers said. “You have luck, you go through streaks. You make your own luck.”But the Clippers coach seemed to doubt his words even as he said them.“You play the whole year to get to the playoffs,” he said, “and you work your butt off to get to the playoffs and for this to happen twice in a row for him, you do start thinking…”He did not fill in the obvious blank.“Blake does everything right to me,” Rivers said. “I really do believe in the basketball gods. And I think at some point – obviously, it won’t be this year for him – there will be sunshine for him. Just right now, there isn’t.”last_img read more

In the co-main event, Braun Strowman, a late replacement for Roman Reigns, defeated Goldberg to win the Universal championship. Also on the show, Becky Lynch retained the “Raw” women’s title with a victory over Shayna Baszler.Sporting News’ complete coverage of the opening night of WrestleMania 36 is below:WrestleMania 36 live results, updates from Night 1(All times Eastern.)The Undertaker buries AJ Styles in a Boneyard Match10 p.m.: This was a great match because of how it was shot. It was taped late at night, which gave it a special ominous feel. Styles appeared to win when he put The Undertaker in the six-foot hole. When he went into the tractor to put the dirt on him, The Undertaker came up from and pummled him. He beat Styles around the entire graveyard, including choke-slamming him off the top of the house. He finished off Styles with the Tombstone piledriver. The Undertaker forgave Styles for the comments he made and then walked away, only to turn around and front-kick Styles into the grave. He went into the tractor, dumped the dirt for the victory and rode into the darkness on his motorcycle.9:47 p.m.: Just when it appeared The Undertaker was finished, he rose from the dead. The #Deadman rises. #Undertaker #BoneyardMatch #WrestleMania @AJStylesOrg pic.twitter.com/LPToSahsME— WWE WrestleMania (@WrestleMania) April 5, 20209:36 p.m.: It’s now time for the main event of Night 1: AJ Styles battles The Undertaker in a Boneyard match. Styles is in this, so it should be somewhat good. Styles came out in a hearse and The Undertaker came into the cemetery riding his motorcycle. Braun Strowman overpowers Goldberg to win the Universal title9:30 p.m.: Here’s hoping you didn’t step out of the house for a moment, because this match didn’t go long. Goldberg came out and blasted Strowman with three consecutive spears but Strowman kicked out at two. Undeterred, Goldberg connected on one more spear. He went for the Jackhammer finish but Strowman slipped out and hit three powerslams of his own. Sensing he had Goldberg beat, Strowman did the move one time to become Universal champion for the first time. The finish was a surprise because the money is in Goldberg-Reigns. Strowman has been made to be afterthought so it’s difficult to believe in him as the champion.FOUR @Goldberg Spears cannot keep The #MonsterAmongMen @BraunStrowman down! #WrestleMania pic.twitter.com/ApS1EYhtEi— WWE (@WWE) April 5, 20209:24 p.m.: It is time for the co-main of WrestleMania 36’s opening night: Universal champion Goldberg against Braun Strowman. Strowman is a late replacement for Roman Reigns, who pulled out of the event. WWE didn’t explain why Strowman is in. Pretty hilarious that Goldberg did his entire entrance from the locker room to the ring. One can pray this doesn’t go too long. 9:21 p.m.: Paul Heyman does a promo with Charley Caruso previewing the bout Sunday between his client, Brock Lesnar, and Drew McIntyre for the WWE championship. Heyman vows Lesnar will walk away with the gold.9:17 p.m.: MoJo Rawley and Rob Gronkowski were talking about how great WrestleMania has been when R-Truth interrupted them. Gronkowski had enough and hit a forearm to Truth. Rawley pulled Gronkowski away and scored the pin to win the 24-7 belt. Just stop, please stop, with Rawley and Gronkowski. The act is already tiresome.Kevin Owens beats Seth Rollins in physical affair9:15 p.m.: After Rollins accepted the terms, Owens regained control and never took a step back. He went as far as climbing the top of the WrestleMania sign, jumped off it for a Running Senton to send Rollins through a table. Owens rolled a battered Rollins back into the ring. Rollins begged for mercy but Owens didn’t oblige and connected on the Stone Cold Stunner to win the grudge match. Owens and Rollins gave it their all, but it was hard to get into this match. The circumstances of the entire event made it feel a bit underwhelming.9:10 p.m.: Thoroughly enjoying the running commentary by Rollins and Owens. Never see that. 9:06 p.m.: Owens won by disqualification but he rolled back into the ring and challenged Rollins to a No Holds Barred match.OH MY MESSIAH!!!! 😱#WrestleMania @WWERollins @FightOwensFight pic.twitter.com/pKxa9daB7P— WWE (@WWE) April 5, 20208:53 p.m.: Next at WrestleMania, Seth Rollins takes on Kevin Owens. The buildup has been excellent. Cross your fingers that Rollins and Owens get time to shine. John Morrison survives to beat Kofi Kingston and Jimmy Uso to retain ‘Smackdown’ tag team titles8:47 p.m.: Morrison put on a one-man show, performing one spectcular spot after another. A creative ending that has never been done in a ladder match: three wrestlers on a ladder and each had hold of the belts. They were pulling back and forth when Kingston and Uso head-butted Morrison, who grabbed the titles and fell off the ladder. Hopefully, this shows WWE chairman Vince McMahon that Morrison can be a star and let him attempt to shine in singles matches.  WHAT A MATCH. Originally, it was supposed to be Morrison teaming with The Miz, Kingston with Big E and Uso with his brother Jey but Miz, got sent home after coming to the taping ill. Sami Zayn gets help from his cohorts to best Daniel Bryan and retain Intercontinental title8:24 p.m.: Bryan controlled the majority of the action with Zayn being the slimy heel and continuing to back off. A new champion was on its way to being crowned when Zayn’s partners, Cesaro and Shinsuke Nakamura, jumped Bryan’s tag team partner, Drew Gulak, from behind. Bryan wiped them out. He went to the top rope when Zayn connected on the Helluva Kick to remain the titleholder.Too bad Bryan and Zayn weren’t given more time to shine. They were building something good and got cut short.Another one for the good guys #WrestleMania #DoubleDuty #AndStill pic.twitter.com/nhKBC289Yw— Cesaro (@WWECesaro) April 5, 20208:14 p.m.: Coming up at WrestleMania, Sami Zayn faces Daniel Bryan for the Intercontinental championship. If this match was given any time whatsoever, this could be fantastic.Becky Lynch beats Shayna Baszler to retain ‘Raw’ women’s title 8:08 p.m.: Quite surprised how good Lynch and Baszler performed. Baszler controlled the majority of the bout by mixing power moves with MMA submissions while Lynch got in an occasional spot. Baszler locked in her rear-naked choke when Lynch rolled back with her feet on the mat to lock in Baszler to score the pinfall. They went the right amount of time and didn’t allow it to drag. This was Baszler’s best match since moving up to the main roster. Surprised by the finish; most wrestling pundits expected Baszler to win the belt. Wonder what that means for Baszler going forward and whether that signals a return of Ronda Rousey to try to reclaim the belt she lost to Lynch at last year’s WrestleMania 35.You have to give it to @BeckyLynchWWE, she ALWAYS defies the odds!#TheMan defeats #TheCagefighter @QoSBaszler to retain her #WWERAW #WomensTitle at #WrestleMania! pic.twitter.com/kWGmGtyqKD— WWE (@WWE) April 5, 20207:54 p.m.: Right now at WrestleMania, Becky Lynch defends the “Raw” Women’s title against Shayna Baszler. Surprised we are seeing it now, considering Lynch is arguably the biggest full-time star. Let’s see if Baszler can deliver because her showings on the main roster have been lackluster.Elias cheats to defeat King Corbin7:45 p.m: Elias came out with a vengeance before the bell sounded and hit Corbin with his guitar. Corbin shook out the cobwebs and looked to be moments away from victory when he started arguing with the official. That allowed Elias to come up from behind to secure a rollup with a grab of the tights for the win. Strange to see a babyface cheat to win.7:35 p.m.: The current match showing is King Corbin vs. Elias. This bout was made when Rob Gronkowski got into a confrontation with Corbin on a recent episode of “SmackDown.” Don’t expect this to be any good. If you need to go take a bathroom break, do it now.Alexa Bliss and Nikki Bliss beat The Kabuki Warriors (Asuka and Kairi Sane) to become ‘Smackdown’ women’s tag team champs7:32 p.m.: After each team attempted to put the other away with their respective finishers, Cross connected on a swinging neckbreaker and Bliss hit another Twisted Bliss onto Sane to win the belts for the second time. Not a bad match, and that’s because of Asuka and Sane, who are two of the best females wrestlers in the world. PURE EMOTION.We have NEW @WWE Women’s #TagTeamChampions, and their names are @AlexaBliss_WWE & @NikkiCrossWWE! #WrestleMania pic.twitter.com/TZIFqrMqnA— WWE (@WWE) April 4, 20207:25 p.m.: Pretty funny to see Cross keep clapping her hands to get no one excited to encourage Bliss to tag her in.7:16 p.m.: Before I forget, John Bradshaw Layfield is commentating with Michael Cole. 7:13 p.m.: The main card of WrestleMania begins with Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross challenging The Kabuki Warriors (Asuka and Kairi Sane) for the “SmackDown” women’s tag team titles. Asuka has been the highlight for WWE with her commentary since the shows have gone empty-arena.7:10 p.m.: Rob Grankowski said he was needed for an event that was too big for one night. It was technically sound, but hopefully this isn’t a sign of things to come where we see short bouts the entire night.NO HANDS. WWE has gone with two-man tables since having to go to the Performance Center, because only a certain number of people can be in an area.6:27 p.m.: The first and only match on the kickoff show is Drew Gulak taking on Cesaro. Not a bad way to begin things; these are two of the best pure wrestlers in WWE.6:05 p.m.: The kickoff show is underway with Corey Graves and Peter Rosenberg. It is here where WWE decides to announce which matches are airing this evening. How that wasn’t done earlier is beyond me. Some of the featured matches include Goldberg vs. Braun Strowman, AJ Styles vs. The Undertaker in a Boneyard match and Becky Lynch vs. Shayna Baszler for the “Raw” women’s title. This isn’t your normal WrestleMania. WWE is holding its biggest annual event at its Performance Center in Orlando. ‘I nearly quit Arsenal’, admits Giroud

first_img“But after a big reflection with everybody around me, like my family and my close friends, I (decided I) wanted to stay at Arsenal and I thought the story was not over, (not) finished at Arsenal.“The club bring me a lot and I think I give it back. I still want to improve again and again and win some more trophies for the club, so as I said to the boss our story is not finished, so everybody was pleased with that.”Wenger has always maintained his desire to keep Giroud — who has 99 goals for the club — at Arsenal and was full of praise for the striker on the eve of the Cologne clash.“I have said many times that his contribution has been huge,” he said.“He has had a great evolution here and overall (his) contribution has been tremendous, and I think he has shown a very loyal spirit and has a high respect from everybody inside the club, as well as (from) our fans.”Share on: WhatsApp London, United Kingdom | AFP | Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud admitted on Wednesday that he came close to leaving the club in the close season before deciding to stay because his “story is not over”.The France international has fallen behind club-record signing and compatriot Alexandre Lacazette in the pecking order this season but has come off the bench in all of the Gunners’ games so far this season.Danny Welbeck also appears to be ahead of Giroud in the manager’s thoughts, but the 30-year-old is likely to get a rare chance to impress from the start in Thursday’s Europa League clash with Cologne.Manager Arsene Wenger will make a number of changes as Arsenal play in the competition for the first time in 17 years, with Giroud expected to be one of several alterations. The forward, who scored a late winner in the opening-day Premier League victory against Leicester City, has struggled to hold down a regular first-team place at the Emirates Stadium and admitted he nearly quit over the summer having been linked with the likes of Everton and West Ham United.Asked how close he came to leaving Arsenal, Giroud told reporters at the club’s training base north of London: “Actually that’s a very private decision because it’s true that I was close to leaving the club because I said that I wanted to play.last_img read more

STABLE NOTES BY ED GOLDEN – THURSDAY MAY 12, 2016

first_imgIMPROVEMENT EXPECTED FROM DENMAN’S CALL IN BARRERADenman’s Call was beaten 24 ½ lengths in the Santa Anita Derby, but Leandro Morasays you can dismiss that performance because of the sloppy track.Doug O’Neill’s trusted assistant expects dramatic improvement from the son of NorthernAfleet in Saturday’s Grade III Laz Barrera Stakes for three-year-olds at seven furlongs.“We kind of drew a line through that race,” Mora said, “not that he was going to beatanybody, but he kind of took the path that had more water on it, and that doesn’t help a horse that’s always been on the lead.“I get the feeling he’s going to run better this time. We also have Mrazek in the race, and he’s been first or second in his five races, all sprints, so we expect another big effort.”The Barrera, which goes as race six on an 11-race card starting at 2 p.m.: Bistraya, Santiago Gonzalez, 15-1; Iron Bob, Stewart Elliott, 4-1; Mrazek, Mario Gutierrez, 7-2; Denman’s Call, Rafael Bejarano, 3-1; Smokey Image, Victor Espinoza, 4-1; Westbrook, Tiago Pereira, 12-1; and I Will Score, Martin Garcia, 5-2.ARCATURE RETURNS TO MILE IN SINGLETARY STAKESArcature cuts back to a mile in Saturday’s $75,000 Singletary Stakes for three-year-oldson turf, and trainer Simon Callaghan is confident the son of Archarcharch fits well. The bay colt owned by Arnold Zetcher was a close fourth in the Pasadena Stakes at amile on grass March 13, beaten less than two lengths despite a wide trip.“A mile is fine,” Callaghan said. “I think anywhere from a mile to a mile and an eighthsuits him, but he’s training great and it looks like he has a really good shot in there.”Callaghan was understandably delighted with the impressive victory by Taris in theGrade I Humana Distaff at Churchill Downs on Kentucky Derby Day.“She definitely likes that distance (seven furlongs),” he said. “She’ll probably go in theVanity (Mile) next.” The Vanity is expected to attract champions Beholder and Stellar Wind, so it would definitely be an event worth seeing.Firing Line, also owned by Zetcher, had his first breeze Tuesday since running in last year’s Preakness. DD Pets: Being a good dog owner – with LK Pets

first_imgWhy is it so important to leash your dog in public? Many people think this is just another nuisance law to abide by. They think there dog is friendly and there is no reason it should be leashed. It may be true you may have a friendly dog but other dogs may not be as friendly. If you see someone walking their dog on a leash you should assume that they and the dog both do not want to be approached by a strange dog. This weekend I was out on a walk and just up ahead of me I seen a leashed bichon being attacked by a off leash husky. This all could have been prevented if the owner had the leash in his hand actually attached to his dog. The good news is the dog was ok but it was pretty freighted.Events like these can have a traumatic effect on dogs. Its more than likely this bichon may now start showing aggression through fear to larger dogs if not even small dogs. Not every dog is ok to be approached by strange dogs regardless of how friendly your dog is.Why Muzzle a dog?If any dog has any aggression issues, nervous issues, or shyness with other dogs or people you should muzzle that dog on walks on leash or off leash. If you want to take the muzzle off your dog you should really contact a professional Trainer for help with training to get your dog safe in a public place.Keep your garden secure Why should you keep your garden secure and not let your dog wander the streets? There are many reasons why it’s important to have a fenced and secure yard for your dog. Mostly its common sense. If your dog chases cars you are not just putting your dog in jeopardy but you are also putting drivers on the road at risk of crashing to avoid your dog. I dodge the same dog everyday on my way home from work. If your yard is too big to fence then either buy a dog run or keep your dog leashed unless you have a solid recall.Check out our k9academy facebook page. Donegal businessman helps launch Google’s ‘Adopt a Start-Up’

first_imgA Donegal businessman has helped Google launch their Adopt A Startup 2017 programme.Ian Harkin of Arklu is the current Google Start-Up winner.Irish Startup companies can apply for a position on the tech giant’s Adopt a Startup Spring 2017 programme through their online application process. The process will close on December 1st and forms part of Google’s commitment to supporting the Startup community in Ireland. With 30 positions on the programme up for grabs the full list of companies selected will be revealed in early January 2017.Successful applicants will receive 12 weeks of hands-on mentoring and access to exclusive lectures and workshops. Interested Startups should submit their entry at: https://events.withgoogle.com/adoptastartup/apply/Head of Google Ireland’s Startup Engagement programme, Paddy Flynn said,“This is a hugely beneficial programme for Irish Startups. The types of Startups we are looking for, and who will benefit the most from participation, are those in business for more than one year, with a strategy in place for acquiring new customers and already generating revenue. They will be thinking globally and rapidly scaling their business, or planning to enter into new markets over the first six months in 2017. He added, “This is an intense programme so participants also need to be available to participate in a hands-on three month mentoring program and be willing to embrace change and take action on feedback given. Since we launched our Adopt a Startup programme 2014 we have worked with almost 100 high potential Irish Startups and many have gone on to raise significant capital funding and greatly increase their employee numbers.”Each company selected will get to work with a dedicated Google support team to develop and improve their overall business strategy with the programme culminating in a Dragons Den style competition final in Spring 2017.Now in its fourth year, the success of the programme has seen 2016 winners Arklu, Truckscience, and Beutifi.com go from strength to strength, growing their profiles and expanding their businesses online.Overall winner of the 2016 programme Ian Harkin, managing director of Donegal toy maker Arklu, said that since taking part his business has already exceeded targets compared to previous years of business:“We are well on track to double our turnover this year compared to last year and since winning the competition our sales have tripled compared to the same period last year. In addition, we have signed a worldwide book deal with Penguin publishers, one of our Lottie dolls returned from space having spent 264 days on the international space station, and we are close to signing off on a major new investment. By this time next year we also hope to have doubled our current workforce to employ 20 people in Donegal.” Ian added, “We were a little hesitant about entering the Adopt a Startup programme because we are a product based company. We thought this programme would only suit IT based businesses. But we quickly understood that Google is helping all types of businesses every day to be found online and to find new customers, in every part of the world, no matter how remote, so it was a golden opportunity for us to learn from the them.”Mayo’s Truckscience and Dublin’s Beutifi.com who placed second and third respectively in the 2016 programme also spoke of similar success since completing the programme.Sorcha O’Grady, Director of Sales & Marketing, Truckscience said, “The Google Adopt A Startup program has had a hugely positive impact on our business. It helped us to measure and improve all of the stages of our customer journey. In the six months since completing the program, we have acquired as many new customers for our Axle Weight Calculator as we did in the three years prior to participation and we now have customer in over 20 countries around the world.”Richie Spence, Founder of Beutifi.com said, “The programme provided us with the skills and tools to improve our user experience, understand our customers in much more detail and showed us how we could target and acquire them in a much more cost effective manner, so much so we have improved our booking conversion rates by almost 70%.” The Adopt a Startup Programme forms part of Google’s commitment to supporting the Startup community in Ireland through mentoring events such as Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur and hosting community events with partners like Startup Weekend and Enterprise Ireland. This commitment includes the expansion of the Google Tech Hub Network to Ireland by partnering with Dogpatch Labs a physical space for startups to work from and for community events. The Google Tech Hub partnership helps to open new doors to mentorship, investment and growth opportunities, and to help developers and entrepreneurs launch new ideas and turn them into thriving young companies. Irish Startups also avail of direct support from Google for Entrepreneurs programs in Dublin, London and the US.Donegal businessman helps launch Google’s ‘Adopt a Start-Up’ was last modified: November 22nd, 2016 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)last_img read more

Academics unpack xenophobia

first_imgDelegates attending the conference. The call for xenophobia to endhas spread across the continent. Professor Gqola giving her address.Khanyi Magubane The outbreak of xenophobic violence across the country has prompted academics in South Africa to bring their minds together to try and get to the bottom of the social ills at the root of the violence. On 28 May 2008, the University of Witwatersrand’s faculty of humanities hosted a colloquium entitled “Violence and Xenophobia in Johannesburg: Critical responses today”. The aim of the colloquium was to discuss the underlying causes, contexts and consequences of the attacks on foreigners in South Africa.Dean of the faculty, Professor Tawana Kupe, says it was critical to host the gathering in a bid to offer intellectual leadership on the matter. “The situation demands that we as academics use our scholarship and expertise to engage in the search for short- and long-term solutions to these issues.”“This forum provided an opportunity for scholars from Wits University to offer a range of critical perspectives on these events,” said Professor Shireen Hassim, the deputy dean of research at the faculty of humanities. “Our aim was to stimulate reflection, debate and activism in the academic community and amongst members of the broader public.”A media perspectiveJournalists who have been covering the violence also attended the discussion to give an eyewitness account of the uprisings. Alex Aliseev, a journalist from the Star newspaper, spoke of how he witnessed the helplessness and trauma experienced by foreigners as they were forced out of their homes. Many of the immigrants were then forced to find temporary shelter at police stations.A visibly distressed Aliseev recalled journalists having to put their personal feelings aside to write the story and take the photographs, which have moved not only the entire country, but the world too.Professor Anton Harber, of the university’s school of journalism and media studies, analysed media coverage of the violence. He noted that in some publications, like the Daily Sun, the term “aliens” was constantly used to refer to foreigners.Harber also noted that when the violence first erupted the paper failed to use the story as its front page lead until several days later when there had been deaths and high-profile figures had been to visit the hotspots. He said the story angles taken by the Daily Sun gave the impression that the violence had been a long time coming and that foreigners had been a nuisance among the poor as they were all battling for the same resources. In stark contrast, the Star had almost from the beginning of the violence given priority to the victims of the story, and less attention to the attackers. The term “mob” was also used frequently in their coverage of the story, referring to groups of South Africans who carried out the attacks on the foreigners.Harber noted that even though the almost philanthropic coverage of the violence by the Star might have made the public feel better about themselves, the public also had to reflect on which one was really giving the true picture of our society. The scholars’ point of viewSeveral academics then took to the floor to give different perspectives on the cause, effect and possible solutions to the violence.Devan Pillay, associate professor at the university’s department of sociology, came out strongly against what he termed the culture of entitlement that some South Africans tended to adhere to. He said this contributed to the sentiments that foreigners were “stealing our jobs and our women”.Pillay said that poverty does not cause uprisings, but deprivation does. In addition, what is happening in South Africa is not really unique – it happens in societies where expectations are not met. This then gives rise to misdirected frustrations and politicians seemingly indifferent to the plight of the poor.Stephen Gelb, visiting professor of economics at Wits, echoed Pillay’s sentiments and spoke of economic inequality and its social consequences. He raised the pertinent point that inequality and poverty cannot be treated with the same medicine. Quoting a few statistics, Gelb gave a startling picture of the disparity between the rich and the poor in South Africa.According to his figures, the top 10% of earners in the country account for 51% of the country’s entire income, while the bottom 10% account for only 0.2%. While poverty can be addressed by means of job creation and offering social grants to assist those living below the bread line, this does not address the frustrations of the poor who still remain at the bottom of the ladder.Gelb says inequality can be addressed by empowering people with education, skills, land and houses, as asset ownership gives people opportunities to live a better life.Other scholars gave a legal perspective, asking whether our constitution ever made allowance for such a social catastrophe, while others brought the “elite” to order saying that they cannot absolve themselves from the crisis as the unbalanced distribution of power also contributes to the frustration of the poor.Feminist writer Professor Pumla Gqola, from the school of literature and language studies, said that the current spate of attacks is a culmination of xenophobic violence that has been taking place on a smaller scale in the country, without much resolution. She cited last year’s attacks on Somali nationals in Cape Town which, despite good media coverage, did not prompt government to come out strongly and condemn the attacks. She further noted that the “incomprehensible shock” reaction of South Africans is typical of the way that society distances itself from the plight of the victims.Gqola also noted that the attacks seemed to be divided along racial lines as immigrants of other races were not subject to the same treatment as those living in townships. It seemed, Gqola said, that South Africa had found its “throwaway people” in foreigners. She described throwaway people as those who are easy to violate. The immigrants are easy victims as they fall outside the protection of South African law and could easily be victimised. This, she said, raised questions about whether the country was kinder to immigrants that are well off, in stark contrast to those who are living in poverty.Tightening border controlOne of the most critical issues to the current xenophobic violence is the relative ease with which foreigners are able to gain access to the country. To this end, professor of anthropology, David Coplan, painted a picture of the “South African identity for sale” in his discussion entitled “Crossing borders”.According to Coplan, a lack of tight control at our borders and corrupt home affairs officials makes it easy for immigrants to enter the country without the proper documentation or using fraudulent documents. This has led to South Africa using millions of rands each year to deport illegal immigrants, many of whom eventually return to the country. The solution, says Coplan, is for government to start applying vigilant measures at our borders. One of the ways in which this can happen is to use improved IT solutions on the officials’ computer system. Whenever a foreigner arrives at the border, upon his or her passport number being entered into the computer, a history page detailing the number of entries into the country should show up. If a person has been deported previously this should aslo appear on the system, as well as any criminal offences. If a person is coming into the country on a work/study permit this should also be reflected.Coplan says that currently the government does not have the proper management of border controls and once the infrastructure has been established it might start alleviating the escalating problem of illegal immigrants finding themselves unprotected as they have neither the proper refugee status nor a permit to work or study in the country.Solutions mentioned at the colloquium included government taking responsibility for the outbreak of violence by providing the displaced immigrants with all the help they need. The government was also urged to educate South Africans on migration and learning how to co-exist in peace with nationals from other countries.Useful linksUnited for AfricaWits University Faculty of HumanitiesSouth African Human Rights CommissionCentre for the Study of Violence and ReconciliationSouth African Institute for Race Relations Do you have any queries or comments about this article?
