Poch says Spurs’ £600m stadium debt means they can’t spend big on transfers

first_imgMAURICIO POCHETTINO says Spurs’ £600million stadium debt leaves them behind even Arsenal on the Premier League grid.Building the new ground has put the brakes on Tottenham’s spending — just like their North London rivals were shackled by the cost of the Emirates.3 Pochettino says Spurs’ £600m stadium debt means they can’t spend big on transfers… like Arsenal after their move to the EmiratesCredit: ReutersAnd boss Pochettino compared his club to a mid-ranking team in Formula One, trying to keep up with mega-bucks rivals in England and in Europe.Pochettino said: “Different clubs ask the bank for £600m to invest in the team. Like Barcelona.“They create a debt signing players and putting the debt on the pitch, trying to win. We are different.“We need to create the legacy for the future. In this period, we are suffering the restrictions but it’s normal. The restrictions, OK, we need to work hard to find a way to compete in this very tough league, in a different way to our rivals.“Mercedes compete with Ferrari, McLaren, Red Bull… we compete in the same race and if you judge, it needs not only to be about the race but the whole process.”Pochettino claims the comparison between his options at centre- forward and what Arsenal can call on illustrates his point. The departure of free agent Fernando Llorente has left Spurs looking a little light up top.Pochettino added: “Arsenal in the last two years signed Pierre- Emerick Aubameyang, the best striker in Germany, Alexandre Lacazette, the best striker in France and one year after, Pepe.“If look at us over five years, we haven’t signed one striker. Now our main striker is Harry Kane but our second specific striker is 17- years-old, Troy Parrott.3“That is the difference in the projects. I don’t want to say one is wrong and another is good.“It’s only that the way we operate is completely different.”Tottenham did break their transfer record to sign Lyon midfielder Tanguy Ndombele in a £65m deal this summer, as well splashing out £25m on Fulham’s 19-year-old winger Ryan Sessegnon. But Poch insists the club do not have the money to transform themselves as quickly as clubs like Liverpool, who beat them in the Champions League final in June. The Spurs boss said: “When Klopp arrived in October 2015, more than one year after me, when we drew 0-0 here, not one of their starting XI of players is there in the starting XI today.“And the substitutes are not there. If you compare with us, we have eight or nine players still in the starting XI. Look at the difference.”Pochettino feels Spurs are victims of their own over-achievement, with the 1-0 home defeat to Newcastle last Sunday sparking talk of crisis — and even wild rumours that he intended to quit after today’s game.Yet the Argentine accepts his team’s Premier League form — just four wins and 15 points from their last 15 games — must change. He added: “The problem we had is we were so good in our results and performances, that we didn’t start in the way we’d expect or people would expect.“That led to, ‘Big problem’ and ‘Pochettino is going to walk away’ and this type of situation that someone with no common sense created.”“In the Premier League over the last six months, I think it was not great. Storm proud of their Round 1 record

first_imgExtending their incredible streak was an impressive feat on the road in front of a hostile home crowd and in tough wet-weather conditions. However, it is only Round 1 and captain Cameron Smith knows there’s a long way to go for Melbourne to return to the Telstra Premiership decider. “I don’t think I’ve ever played a Round 1 game and come away and thought ‘it can’t get any better than that’,” Smith said. “I think there are some fundamental things we need to improve on – there’s no doubt about that.”The Storm are renowned for their gruelling preseason training sessions and boot camps which were initially planned in anticipation of a tricky State of Origin period without many of their star players. While they may lose several key members again this year, getting off to a good start is still a priority for Craig Bellamy who enters his 15th season as head coach.”We had more focus on it five or six years ago when we had a lot of players in Origin because we knew it was going to be a real strain on us,” Bellamy said. “We had six or seven in Origin so we planned for a lull. But these days we haven’t got a whole heap. We’ve got Cam (Smith) and Coops (Cooper Cronk), hopefully (Will) Chambers too, and Macca (Jordan McLean) and Dale (Finucane) might be in line for NSW.”Their off-season formula has served them well over their long period of sustained success as an NRL powerhouse.”I’d like to think too that we work really hard in the pre-season,” Bellamy said.”Every team would think they work really hard in the preseason but I’d like to think that players who get through our pre-season will handle most things come Round 1.”The last couple of years we had games that could go either way, like tonight could’ve gone either way.”Melbourne jumped out to an early 12-0 lead before Canterbury fought back to regain momentum and trail by six points.Their extra efforts in the pre-season were the exact difference that got them over the line against a desperate Bulldogs side who were storming home. “They (the Bulldogs) had plenty of opportunities down our end,” Smith said. “Defensively I was very pleased with our effort. “I was quite pleased with how we played out the game given Jesse Bromwich left early (with a dislocated thumb injury) too. “Young guys, who came on for short stints last year, had to play big minutes tonight and I was really proud of what they did.”last_img read more

They’ve been in a couple of World Cups so should be a good game and [we’re] very excited that they’ve accepted our proposal to play a warm-up game against Niue. The storm Dennis threatens again the day of the Premier

first_imgThe English football calendar, already tight due to the large number of active competitions, could be compromised again. The reason? A new storm, this time known as Dennis, is approaching British lands from the Atlantic and it could have its greatest consequences in the next 72 hours. Just when the remaining six matches of matchday 26 of the Premier League are scheduled. Six meetings not counting the duel between Manchester City and West Ham, which could not be played last Sunday and has had to be postponed to next Wednesday, February 19.It will be the second time in two weeks that England suffers such a storm. Ciara already hit the British Isles last week, leaving in its path, according Daily Express, to more than 20,000 homes without power supply, winds of 156 kilometers per hour and rains that with which the water reached almost 18 centimeters in height. And of course, it prevented the duel between citizens Y hammers It could be played. It is estimated that Dennis could carry wind gusts of up to 97 kilometers per hour, torrential rains and even snow in some parts of the country. Consequences that they don’t seem as fatal to the practice of football as those brought by Ciara but, even so, could put in check the planning of the day. In that sense, Mike Riley, director of the regulatory body of the parties of the Premier, the PGMOL. Riley explained that “There are two main considerations to make when conducting a field inspection: player safety and spectacle. A referee must consider whether the playing conditions threaten the well-being of the players and if they compromise the game as a spectacle for the fans. “In this way, Riley passes the hot potato to the members designated for the six games that remain from the twenty-sixth day. A date that will open with a duel between Wolves and Leicester and whose main course will be the clash between Chelsea and Manchester United at Stamford Bridge. Liverpool you could get even closer to the title in your visit to Norwich; while the remaining duels would be the Southampton-Burnley and the Arsenal-Newcastle. The postponement of any of these parties would be fatal for the organization of the English calendar, which will already have a very tight end of the season with the final of the FA Cup and the outcome of European competitions.last_img read more
