NBC News is joining the parade of traditional news outlets trying to capture the interest of a rising generation of news junkies who get their fix with mobile devices and streaming video. The NBCUniversal unit, which already produces broadcast programs like “Meet the Press” and “Today,” cable hours including “The Rachel Maddow Show” and “Deadline: The White House,” and the Snapchat-based “Stay Tuned” will now turn to broadband. Its new streaming outlet, “NBC News Signal” is slated to launch in mid-2019 and will feature original content.Older millennials and younger Generation Xers “are hungry for news programming as anybody, and they want to consume it in a different way,” said Nick Ascheim, senior vice president for digital at NBC News Group, in an interview. “We want to meet them there.” So do many others. NBC News will vie with many entrants in the broadband space. CBS News operates video-streaming hub CBSN. ABC News seeks to give streamers the most important live news at any moment with ABC News Live. Fox News is expected to launch the subscription-video service Fox Nation in weeks to come. And then there’s Cheddar, Vice and others. All of them are chasing viewers who have traded newspaper headlines for smartphone alerts and the evening news for on-demand video clips. The share of Americans who often get news on a mobile device – 58% – has nearly tripled since 2013, according to a report issued in July by Pew Research. In that year, only 21% of U.S. citizens did. That sharp increase has been fueled by an embrace of the technology by older Americans and lower-income families, according to the study, a sign that early adopters aren’t the only ones who have moved to a mobile-centric life.NBC News Signal is already up and running. Its programming is available on NBCNews.com, in the NBC News mobile and OTT apps, on PlutoTV and via YouTube and Twitter. A show anchored by Simone Boyce, who came abroad in July, will move from streaming at 7 p.m. on just Thursdays to airing every weeknight at that time, later in the current quarter. Additional daily programming, including a morning and afternoon show and hourly news updates called “Briefly’s,” will launch later this quarter and in early 2019.Signal viewers may see some familiar NBC News and MSNBC faces, but they will not see any shows from those outlets. All of its programming will be original, though likely created with talent and crew from MSNBC and NBC News. One of the challenges NBC has to navigate with Signal is making sure it does not cannibalize viewers from MSNBC, which generates healthy revenue from advertising and affiliate fees. “If you want to see Rachel Maddow, you still have to get a cable subscription,” said Ascheim. The tone of the programming won’t be as formal as what a viewer might see in more traditional outlets, the executive said. “The tone is more conversational,” he said. But Signal aims to deliver more context and depth than the typical Twitter-distributed video clip. “People get alerts and headlines. The have a sense of what’s happening, but they do not feel deeply informed,” said Aschiem. “We want to bring them some of that depth, some of that context, help them make sense of things.” NBC News will feature some political programming on Signal in the days leading up to the midterm elections. Steve Kornacki’s digital show “218: Race for the House” will air daily at 12pm ET and on election day, November 6th, Katy Tur will host a pre-show on the network from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m eastern.Erica Fink and Christine Cataldi are the executive producers for the network. Rashida Jones, senior vice president of specials for NBC News and MSNBC, is the executive in charge of programming.Signal will contain advertising, said Ascheim, who expresses big ambitions for the venture. “We hope to be up and running all day long, obviously, and we want to be widely distributed across a multitude of platforms.” Popular on Variety ×Actors Reveal Their Favorite Disney PrincessesSeveral actors, like Daisy Ridley, Awkwafina, Jeff Goldblum and Gina Rodriguez, reveal their favorite Disney princesses. Online is a strange and terrifying place. It’s enabled us to connect with one another, advance the causes of science and culture, and unite the world with a glowing net of data. It’s also enabled people with very… particular interests to find each other. In this weekly series, we’ll be dipping into the Internet Gutter – the strange subcultures and weird worlds lurking in the dark pockets of the World Wide Web.GangstalkingA wise man once sang “Just because you’re paranoid / don’t mean they’re not after you.” And then he blew his face off with a shotgun, so there we go. But who is the “they” in that lyric? For the poor victims, we’re about to show you; it’s everybody on the planet Earth. This is gangstalking, the belief that the people around you are part of a massive surveillance conspiracy to document your every move. Here’s how it works: your name gets put on a list, and that list is distributed to a secret society that proceeds to both chronicle everything you do and harasses you into madness. Methods include noise at all hours, social isolation and bizarre “performances” designed to destabilize the target. Police and medical professionals are all in on the act. Victims call themselves “targeted individuals,” and they’ve started to come together and share their stories.Last year, a fascinating New York Times article detailed the phenomenon, which affects some 10,000 people around the country. But it’s really flourished online, as paranoids connect with each other and share their suspicion. The comments thread in this post is a great sampling of self-proclaimed victims from all over the world.I have been gang stalked for 21 years and probably longer but I did know it. It seems that I was born into a targeted family thanks to actions of my grandmother and a wealthy Jewish person. Presently, these sadistic persons, which appear to be at least half of New York City are trying to kill me. I have ordered a Thermal Imaging unit to locate them in my home. If I find them in here, I am going to have to kill them. They have followed me to Eugene, Oregon, and San Francisco. These people are the sickest of the sick. I learned that there is a gang leader by the name of “SARA” in the Palm Springs area and there are more and more reports of this happening out there. That is where it all started, and it is still going on in Hemet, CA today. I am pulsed with electronic weapons that make you: Tired, Nauseated, Sweat, Sneeze, Stomach Ached, Diarrhe, etc. These people are sickos. And, of course, because we’re in the realm of the paranoid, it’s not long before that thread devolves into people accusing each other of being stalkers and harassers themselves. That’s the true terror of gangstalking: it’s you against the world unless you can prove otherwise, and you can’t.The TechThe parties behind this organized harassment have access to some high-tech methods of making lives miserable. The most feared weapon in the gangstalking world is the humble microwave, which has gone beyond just making popcorn to become a device that can cause intense pain, confusion and other symptoms with no physical proof. Some believe that microwave radiation on its own is enough, while others think that they have implants in their body that can be disguised as moles or freckles that act as antennae.Hearing things that aren’t there is another major complaint, and the technology behind that is something they call “voice to skull.” Like a lot of gangstalking worries, it’s based on something sort of real. The U.S. Army was experimenting with this technology back in 2008, but there’s no evidence that it actually works. Many targeted individuals also suffer from Morgellon’s disease, the mysterious ailment where people complain of small fibers growing out of their skin. They speculate that it’s caused by a host of methods, including implants, and, of course, microwaves. The Men In BlackSo who’s behind all of this organized stalking and harassment? That’s one thing targeted individuals just can’t seem to agree on. The New World Order / Illuminati are a popular choice in many of their worlds, as the concept of a shadowy, unaccountable world government underpins a lot of conspiracy fiction. What those people would want with ordinary working-class Americans is a different question.Other fraternal organizations like the Freemasons and the Mafia also figure into gangstalking mythology. Because these groups hide in plain sight, it’s easy to cast them as the villains. Interestingly enough, police departments and even firefighters get the same treatment! Some believe that it’s not humans at all – that the real masterminds of gangstalking are supernatural entities from beyond the vale of reality, who can temporarily inhabit human bodies and control them like puppets. That’s why, when a targeted individual confronts one, they seemingly have no idea what is going on.Finding The TruthUnlike many of the weird subcultures we look at here, gangstalking victims have actually been the subject of some science. A study published in The Journal of Forensic Psychiatry & Psychology interviewed over 1,000 stalking victims. Over 10% of them reported being stalked by groups, with familiar complaints like groups of people acting out scenes on the street for their benefit as well as more unusual ones like “remote enlargement of bodily organs.” The study’s conclusions shouldn’t surprise anybody – they found that the gangstalking subjects were primarily experiencing intense paranoia not grounded in reality.Gangstalking is a truly Internet-enabled disease. Previously, paranoids would mostly keep to themselves, but by connecting with each other across great distances, they feed each other’s delusions and make them stronger. It’s almost impossible to persuade a targeted individual that what they’re experiencing is entirely made up, and I’m pretty sure the comments section of this article is going to prove that a few days after it’s published. Toy Tuesday: 11 Stealthiest Ninja Toys Stay on target Let us know what you like about Geek by taking our survey. You may not think about it often (or at all) but Batman and anime go together like peanut butter and jelly. That much is evident from the latest Batman Ninja trailer, a promotion for the upcoming anime-centric Batman flick that’s coming soon. It’s getting a Western release, and you know what that means — the English voice cast we’ve come to know and love.Batman Ninja is a feature-length collaboration between some very important names in the anime industry. Directed by Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure’s Jumpei Mizusaki, written by Gurren Lagann’s Kazuki Nakashima, and featuring character designs by Afro Samurai’s Takashi Okazaki, it looks like it’s going to be pretty awesome as far as a Batman anime series is concerned. There’s also a star-studded cast in the form of Roger Craig Smith as Batman, Tony Hale as the Joker, Tara Strong as Harley Quinn, and lots more of familiar voices.AdChoices广告As far as the trailer goes, you can see Batman and Bane, who have been inexplicably transported to feudal Japan. The villains are essentially becoming the feudal lords who have taken over, with the Joker taking the “lead” role as he often does. Batman needs to use his intellect and his allies to bring peace to the land, including working with Catwoman and Robin and the rest of the “Bat-Family.” It sounds like a real doozy.Batman Ninja is targeting a digital release on April 24, 2018 and will head to Blu-ray and DVD on May 8, 2018. Later this summer you’ll be able to download it in 4K. For those interested, as you can see in the trailer, it looks to utilize a similar art style to that of the Berserk series that just released, but it appears a bit sharper. Hopefully it really brings the pain as far as Batman films go. We don’t have that much longer to wait to find out.
Angry Birds coming to the web via Google Chrome is not the only gaming news being talked about today. There’s also a new marketing strategy being launched by one of the biggest names in pop music partnering with one of the top social-network gaming companies. Lady Gaga is delving into the gaming world through everyone’s favorite farming game, FarmVille. Zynga, the company behind FarmVille, will help Lady Gaga promote her new album, “Born This Way,” before it is officially released on May 23.This partnership will allow users to play in a Gaga-inspired farm called GagaVille. It will feature colorful crystals, unicorns, and sheep on motorcycles. No, we’re not making this up. There may be some leather and glitter as well, though I don’t see how any of that would be practical on a farm. FarmVille will also feature a first-listen of new, unreleased songs via music streams. GagaVille will launch May 17, one week before the album’s official release. Fans will have between May 17 and May 19 to unlock the three unreleased songs, and on May 20, they can finally hear those songs.Buying a special Zynga $25 game card will get you a “free” full album download. The card is available only at Best Buy starting May 15 through June 11. The download code isn’t effective until May 23, though, so if Gaga fans think they can buy the card to get the album in advance, they’re wrong. The pop star isn’t just going Gaga in FarmVille, she’s also infiltrating Words with Friends, the popular Scrabble game from Zynga. Available for iPhone, iPad, and Android devices, Words with Friends will feature a Words with Gaga contest every day. There will be a daily word which, if played during your Words with Friends game, will reward players with concert tickets and autographed copies of Born This Way. Zynga is also offering exclusive RewardVille virtual items that are Lady Gaga inspired. These will be available across 10 games, including CityVille, FrontierVille, Mafia Wars, Vampire Wars, and more. The meat-dress-wearing Gaga said in a press release that she wanted a way to celebrate and distribute her album with her “little monsters” in a unique, never-before-seen way. Yes, this is a blatant PR move, but it will be interesting to see how well it works. I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of the people playing these Zynga games are also Lady Gaga fans. After all, the album’s single has already sold 2 million copies, and FarmVille has millions of users, so it’s likely that fans will be hitting up FarmVille to get sneak peeks of the three songs.Read more at Zynga

Even the most hardened, jaded gamers played Dong Nguyen’s Flappy Bird more times than they’re willing to admit (even if that was only once); the same goes with Gabriele Cirulli’s power-of-two-em-up 2048. Both games are clones themselves, and have had their share of clones; Flappy Bird had so many that Apple began rejecting them from the App Store, and 2048 even has a Hearthstone-themed clone. Both games are addictive, but almost disturbingly simple. So, thanks to the games’ wild popularity and simple mechanics, internet law decrees that they must be mashed up into a single game. The name of the game, Flappy48, instantly describes exactly what you’ll be doing — flying the power-of-two number through the now-iconic Flappy Bird columns. In between each segment of columns, a new number awaits your growing chain of numbers — just like in 2048, two of the same number will combine to form a bigger number in a single box. The farther you progress in the game, the larger your Flappy Bird-style trail of numbers will be, making it more difficult to effectively flap through the columns. In Flappy48, you can either use the space bar or left click to flap your box. Unlike Flappy Bird and most of its clones, the physics are a little floaty rather than quickly adhering to gravity. However, this seems to maintain Flappy Bird‘s maddening difficulty curve, so fans of Nguyen’s game will feel at home. The 2048 aspect of the game doesn’t really require your attention nearly as much as flapping your boxes does, but the growing chain of numbers does make it increasingly difficult to progress. The game, which you can try here, runs in Unity, so you might need to install the player in your browser. You should be prompted to install it, but if not, you can grab it here.
But the biggest problem I find with God Eater is that the battles are fast and over with before you really get into them. It’s an issue that’s due to it being essentially a mobile title. Missions can be completed in a minute or two in some cases, and the levels themselves are generally tiny, much smaller than anything else in Monster Hunter. There’s also nowhere near as much strategy in God Eater, and while some of the new things are cool (the ability to make custom bullets, for example) the battles themselves tend to devolve into button mashing. Those of you without a 3DS may have no other option, and it’s not as if God Eater is a bad series at all! If you were ignorant of its influences you could play this for dozens of hours and enjoy your time thoroughly, and you still can have fun if you’re not. To be able to get that monster hunting fix on PlayStation 4 or on your PC is a fine thing, but it’s hard to recommend the imitator when the real deal is right there, and with a new release to boot.God Eater 2 Rage Burst is available right now for PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, and PC via Steam. There’s no two ways about it, the God Eater series is a direct ripoff of Monster Hunter. It’s far from the only one (Toukiden is another fine example) but it’s probably the most well-regarded, as Bandai Namco took the proven formula and mixed it up for Monster Hunter-starved PSP owners. Now with the release of God Eater 2: Rage Burst PS4 and PC owners can see what the fuss is about, provided they don’t mind playing a remake of a three year old mobile game. It’s been a big year for God Eater in the States. Just a couple of months ago God Eater Resurrection was unveiled for the PS4 and PS Vita as sort of an appetizer before the full course. Itself a port of the first game in the series, it’s the first console release of the series over here and a fine introduction to it.The anime-influenced aesthetic is fun and the story is simple- you play a (custom created) God Eater who’s aligned with a group of teens who are fighting off demons known as Aragami. The world as we know it is over and it’s become a barren post-apocalyptic wasteland where monsters roam. It’s only via these super-powered God Eaters that humanity has a chance. There’s actually a surprisingly robust, fun, and memorable story told in-between missions, which is fortunate as the battles themselves are repetitive. Most of them simply have you jumping into a battlefield and killing a few monsters, before returning and resupplying to do it again. As with Monster Hunter you’ll be able to learn all about the beasts you confront (the bigger ones run and hide from you to heal, again like Monster Hunter) and let you prepare for the battles. Single and online co-op play with three teammates is supported, allowing you to coordinate for bigger fights.Aside from the heavier reliance on story, the big appeal of God Eater is that your massive, insanely large weapon can transform on the fly. You can turn it from a physical weapon into a gun, or a shield, or even a giant monster demon head that bites into enemies and tears items from them. The other ones seem reasonable enough, but no one seems to really mention how freaky the latter truly is.I can be talking about either God Eater Resurrection or God Eater 2 here, as they both play exactly the same. God Eater 2 takes place three years after the events in Resurrection, however, and finds you playing as a new recruit in a special ‘Blood’ Unit. This means that you’re yet another new-type of God Eater, and this one unlocks Blood powers that augment your skills. They provide an experience system encouraging you to keep trying new attacks, as if you use one long enough you’ll move down a skill tree and get new abilities and buffs.God Eater 2 has 100 hours of story and gameplay, 200 blood arts, a handful of new weapons like a variant scythe, and even more numbers to peruse. There are no real major advancements between the two titles so the key word here is “more,” which isn’t something particularly needed in a genre that allows you to play for months without seeing it all. <>
Grand Theft Auto Online is constantly getting new updates, and this latest one is a huge love letter to a certain 80’s sci-fi movie. The Deadline update introduces the Nagasaki Shotaro: a motorcycle that looks like it comes straight out of Tron. The Shotaro is the centerpiece of the Deadline Adversary Mode. In this 4-player arena deathmatch, players must use the light trail left behind by their bikes to destroy their opponents. The arena is littered with power-ups that will either help or hinder players. The bike as well as the Deadline Outfit is unlocked for purchase after playing Deadline for the first time. For a limited time only, purchasing the Shotaro will get you an in-game Nagasaki logo T-shirt. Players who participate in this mode from now until November 21 will receive double the money and RP.I would be remiss in my duties as a full-time nerd if I didn’t point out that these bike races aren’t exactly like the ones in Tron. Unlike that movie where riders could only make sharp 90 degree turns, players are allowed a full range of movement here. While not one hundred percent faithful to the movie, this does bump up the challenge. The power-ups are certainly a nice addition and should make what is already a chaotic deathmatch even crazier. On top of the double money and RP in Deadline, players will get a boost to their Biker Business with 25% off Business supplies and resupply and an extra 50% GTA money and 2X RP from Biker Business Sales. Players can also take advantage of discounted weapons and tactical vehicles from now to November 21. Your Apps Are Out to Get YouEquifax Screwed Up. Bad. Again. Hackers breached the Securities and Exchange Commission, a US department charged with regulating stock and bonds trading and helping prevent corruption, last year. The agency’s head, Jay Clayton, revealed the news during a Senate hearing Tuesday, according to the Washington Post. The attack may have even allowed hackers to profit off of stock trading — the very thing the department is supposed to prevent.Clayton’s testimony took place with the backdrop of the recent Equifax hack, and senators grilled him on the state of the industry.“I think the resignation of the CEO is by no means enough,” Senator Mark Warner (D-Va.) said, referencing the departure of Equifax executive Richard Smith following the fallout from the breach. “I question whether Equifax has the right to even continue providing these services with the level of sloppiness and lack of attention to cybersecurity.”Clayton responded by saying that the agency would founding a new cybersecurity unity and would be dramatically stepping up its efforts to secure the data it keeps on American businesses and investors.Senator John Kennedy (R-La.) reportedly noticed that several Equifax executives had sold millions’ worth of stock between the time that the company had discovered its breach and when it disclosed that information to the public. “Is that insider trading?” Kennedy pressed.Clayton deflected, adding that the agency was facing an exorbitant number of threats.“We are under constant attack by nefarious actors,” he said. “We must remain on top of evolving threats when it comes to securing our own networks and systems against intrusion.”While the hearing was intended to be about the SEC’s own breach, it became something of a reflection on things that are to come. The SEC’s hack involved a system dubbed “EDGAR,” which stores regulatory filings. If hackers gained access to it, they could have used it to make trades with insider knowledge. Many of the breaches against corporations are, indeed, to gain corporate secrets that could be used for insider trading. Two years ago, federal regulators unearthed a massive hacking ring that was able to make more than $100 million on illicit trades thanks to stolen corporate secrets. The SEC’s response has been to collect more detailed information on top companies, their executives and about stock trades. This would make it easier to detect possible manipulation or insider trading. But, given the SEC’s track record, questions have been raised as to whether or not the agency could properly protect the data it would need, especially in light of the EDGAR breach in 2016. But, if nothing is done, the coming years may be a gold mine for cybercrime and corruption the world over.“It is critical that the SEC safeguards the data it collects and maintains — especially as the consolidated audit trail, or CAT, becomes operational,” Chairman of the Banking Committee, Senator Mike Crap (R-Idaho), said. “The recent Equifax breach has highlighted the need to protect this sensitive and valuable information.”I have a feeling that hacks will be one of the main headline-grabbers we see again and again over the next few years. It’s not looking good for those of us who wanted to avoid a real-world cyberpunk dystopia. Stay on target
Peach To The Rescue!Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is huge. Not just in terms of hype and importance and sales potential, but just in terms of sheer stuff. The Nintendo Switch mascot fighter features over a hundred stages, nearly a thousand songs, and too many Pokemon and items and Assist Trophies to think of crammed onto a cartridge you can plan on the go or on a TV. When you have as many big franchises as Nintendo, putting them all in one game will make that game is very big boy indeed. But the biggest, most exciting thing about Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is its mind-blowing, heartwarming roster of playable characters. Fighting games pride themselves not just on the strength of their mechanics but the strength of its fighters, especially in a crossover fighters like this. And Super Smash Bros. Ultimate crushes all rivals by including every single playable character from the across the four previous games in the twenty-year-old series. Include the new combatants and so far we have over 70 fighters to wrap our heads around. We’re excited, but we’re also intimidated. So to get ready for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, every day, character by character, we’re creating the ultimate guide to all of its characters. Today’s fighters: Peach and Daisy. Stay on target ‘Astral Chain’ and Other Dumb Nintendo SongsThe Ultimate Super Smash Bros. Character Guide: Hero Who Are They?Pauline may have been Mario’s original girlfriend before she ran for office, but Peach has the plumber’s heart now. Maybe it’s because she started going by Princess Peach instead of Princess Toadstool. Mario has rescued Peach across all kinds of kingdoms, countries, and even whole galaxies out of love and a desire for cake. Princess Daisy, meanwhile, is Peach’s sportier counterpart from the Mario spin-offs and ostensibly Luigi’s love interest.Smash HistoryPrincess Peach, and more female representation in general, was a glaring omission in the original Smash 64 that was quickly fixed in Super Smash Bros. Melee. You’ll see a lot of her, too, as she’s one of the stronger characters in that very demanding competitive landscape. And because she uses Toad as an attack, technically the entire Super Mario Bros. 2 cast is playable thanks to her. And now Daisy has been introduced in Ultimate to show off the new “Echo Fighter” brand for clone characters. What Looks New in Ultimate? As kind of a new character, Daisy is the most obviously exciting thing for Peach players. She’s just another option to have if you want to mix things up without having to learn an entirely new character. And Daisy does have some changes to things like attack speed and aerial range. But even if you couldn’t care less about this alternate princess, Peach seems better too with more consistent Smash attacks and buffs to her already dangerous grounded floating aerial game. Our Hopes?Considering how much time she spends as a damsel in distress in her own games, it’s always great to see Princess Peach just decimate characters like Bowser (or Mario) in Smash Bros. Having another princess partner will just make those beatdowns more satisfying. And it’s not like Super Princess Peach where her powers are controlled by emotions. It may break the game, but our biggest hope is that Peach’s dress-twirling down smash gets restored to its absolutely ridiculous Melee power level.Super Smash Bros. Ultimate releases Dec. 7 for Nintendo Switch. Until we can play more for ourselves, changes we talk about here are mostly speculation. For more thoughts check out our Smash hands-on as well as cool Switch games to play that aren’t Smash Bros., because those definitely exist.View as: One Page Slides1/761. Read Mario’s Guide2.
